Cross-country Ski Trip to Lapland Lakes – 2012
February 2 – 5
(Families with children 12 or older and Friends)
Learn to ski this four-day cross-country ski trip to rustic Lapland Lakes Cross Country Ski Center in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. Trip includes three nights' accommodations in rustic cabins, four breakfasts, three dinners, and unlimited use of groomed, wooded trails at Lapland Lake. Snowshoeing, winter hikes, and friendly Naturalists will also make this a trip to remember. Space is limited. Call to request a brochure with more detailed information. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Fragrance in the Garden

Certain plants have fragrant flowers, scented foliage. Why - because it pays to advertise. Fragrant flowers attract pollinators, while fragrant foliage warns off insect pests. Of all our senses, fragrance is the most evocative. It can trigger memories from long ago that we've forgotten. Yet of all senses, fragrances are the most difficult to describe, and one we cannot record as we do sound and sight. This lecture will explore the diversity of plant fragrances and a selection delightful to add to your garden.

Beginner's Hypertufa Workshop
June 22
Hypertufa is a handmade material which resembles "tufa" (too-fa), a rugged volcanic rock used to make troughs. These containers are especially suited for small rock garden plants. You will make your own hypertufa mini-trough and receive instruction for curing and completing it at home. (It takes several weeks to cure completely). You will also receive a finished mini-trough and will plant it to create your own miniature rock garden. It's tufa the price of one! Come dressed to get messy. Workshop fee includes the cost of materials and plants.

Beginner's Hypertufa Workshop
October 12
Hypertufa is a handmade material which resembles "tufa" (too-fa), a rugged volcanic rock used to make troughs. These containers are especially suited for small rock garden plants. You will make your own hypertufa mini-trough and receive instruction for curing and completing it at home. (It takes several weeks to cure completely). You will also receive a finished mini-trough and will plant it to create your own miniature rock garden. It's tufa the price of one! Come dressed to get messy. Workshop fee includes the cost of materials and plants.

"By the Light of the Moon"
Friday, October 19, 2012
For children ages 7 and older with an adult companion.
Led by a Naturalist, adventurers will explore the Great Swamp while listening for animal sounds and using their night vision to walk the swampy trails beneath the stars. Walks will depart every 15 minutes with concurrent indoor activities including a maze, live critters, refreshments and more.

"The Nature of Halloween"

For children ages 3 through 6 with an adult companion.
Explorers will join a Naturalist to stroll the boardwalk around the Environmental Education Center and meet life size misunderstood animals such as a bewitching bat, wise owl, and howling coyote. Indoor activities include a maze, live critters, and more! Cookies and cider top off the night. Walks will depart every 15 minutes.

"Home on the Range" Introductory Western Horseback Ride

This program offers a great opportunity to become more familiar with Western style horseback riding. Riders will receive a mini group lesson with one of Lord Stirling Stable's riding instructors, followed by a one hour trail ride. This program is limited to seven participants. Registration is available in the Stable office from October 8 – 18.

Flower & Landscape Photography – Autumnal Brilliance

While each season in Buck Garden has its own special qualities, none are quite as spectacular as the colors of the trees and shrubs in the fall. Lecture and field session will cover the use of light, composition, landscape photography, close-ups, and how to find the right picture. The workshop will be taught by Nature Photographer Brien Szabo. The class is designed for all levels of digital and film photographers. Pre-registration is required.

Mischief Night Madness

"bouldering," come out and join local boulderers" (rock climbers) and other
volunteers for a day of trail maintenance and invasive species removal. If you want, you can challenge yourself by participating in the Bouldering Competition the next day. Be prepared to get dirty. 17th Annual Turkey Trot
November 17
Lace up your sneakers for the Turkey Trot 5K Race and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk. The course is certified in length and USATF sanctioned. Medals will be awarded to the top three male and female 5K finishers in each of the several age groups. T-shirts guaranteed only to those who register by November 2.

"Turkey Tracks" Trail Ride

See native wild turkeys and other wildlife in their natural habitat on this pre-holiday ride through the woods and meadows of Lord Stirling Stable. Cross-Country Skier - Environmental Education Center

Frost Fest

Winter fun program and activities for all ages – create a winter tree, snowman or animal. Natural exhibits will be displayed to bring the outdoors inside. Kickoff weekend for the month long array of programs begins Saturday, December 1, 2012. Highlights include a dog sled demonstration and Hibernation Masquerade.
Most programs have a fee, some are free.
